Jim Gallien- Jim picked up Chris 4 miles out of Fairbanks, Alaska. Jim is a union electrician and took Chris to the edge of Denali National Park in his truck. Jim is an accomplished hunter and woodsman and he didn't think Chris had enough with him to survive for a few months in the wild. His first impression of Chris was that he was a Jack London nut who wanted to live out his fantasy in Alaska. As Jim got to know Alex more though, he didn't think he was as much of a nut and thought he asked some good questions. Jim tried to talk Alex out of going into the woods and also tried to scare him but nothing worked. When Alex wouldn't give in, Jim offered to at least buy him decent gear but Alex said no to that too. When he was ready to drop Alex off, he convinced him to take better boots and some more food. Jim finally decided that Alex would just leave the bush when he got hungry anyways so he let him go.
Chapter 3
Wayne Westerberg- Wayne lived in Carthage, South Dakota. He picked up Alex on September 10, 1990. He was going to drop Alex off but it was dark and raining so he offered to take Alex back to his farm. He gave Alex a job at the grain elevator and Alex worked extremely hard and impressed Wayne. Wayne could also tell that Alex was intelligent. Wayne also discovered that Alex's real name was Chris and could tell something wasn't right between him and his family. Wayne had many talents and was thrown in jail for four months for selling "black boxes." This caused Alex to leave town because he no longer had work. Alex kept in touch with Wayne and had all of his mail forwarded to Wayne.
Chapter 4
Jan Burres- Jan and her boyfriend picked up Alex in Northern California. They decided to take him with them because they had a boy Alex's age and they wanted to teach Alex a few things when he said he didn't need money and that he abandoned his car. They became attached and Alex kept in touch with them by sending a postcard every couple months. They were planning on visiting Alex in Bullhead city but instead Alex surprised them and showed up at their place. Alex helped them and flea markets and fooled around with Jan. He talked to them about going to Alaska and Bob, Jan's boyfriend, thought he was crazy.
